Antonio Giovinazzi has secured pole position for the opening race of the World Endurance Championship (WEC), set to take place this Sunday in Imola. The Italian, at the wheel of the #51 Ferrari 499P, recorded a time of 1m30.127s, which took him from third to first place in the final moments of the qualifying session.
His time surpassed the 1m30.138s of the #8 Toyota TR010 Hybrid, driven by Ryo Hirakawa, by just one hundredth of a second. Thus, Ferrari has repeated the success of last year by achieving pole in this event.
The second Ferrari vehicle, the #50, secured third position with a time of 1m30.167s, set by Antonio Fuoco, who was also the fastest during the first 12-minute qualifying round.
Peugeot was just behind Ferrari with the best of their 9X8, driven by Malthe Jakobsen, who recorded a time of 1m30.200s, leaving four vehicles within a margin of just four hundredths.
The Cadillac and Jota teams finished in fifth position with a time of 1m30.419s, thanks to Norman Nato, while the #7 Toyota positioned itself sixth with a record of 1m30.432s, set by Nyck de Vries.
In the LMGT3 category, British driver Thomas Fleming surprised with his performance, achieving pole in his debut with the Garage 59 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo. The 23-year-old driver clocked a time of 1m41.181s, leaving Hadrien David in the #78 Lexus RC F GT3 two tenths behind in second position with 1m41.407s.
The Hyperpole session was briefly interrupted due to an incident involving the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R from TF Sport, which spun as the session was nearing its end. The Imola 6 Hours race, set to start at 1:00 PM, promises to be thrilling with a competitive grid and much anticipation.
