After nearly five hours of action, Austin Hill, driving the number 21 Chevrolet from Richard Childress Racing, crossed the finish line in first place in the NASCAR O’Reilly race held in San Diego.

The decisive moments came in the last laps. Taylor Gray caused Carson Kvapil to lose control while leading the race with three laps to go, allowing Hill to overtake Gray just before the checkered flag, thus securing the victory.

Gray finished in second place, followed by Sheldon Creed in third, with Kvapil fourth and Sammy Smith fifth. The rest of the top ten were Jesse Love, Parker Retzlaff, Austin Green, Harrison Burton, and Corey Day.

In a memorable celebration, Hill burned the tires of his vehicle as his victory was celebrated in Victory Lane. In honor of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, he also performed a burnout around the number 8 painted on the track.

This victory represents Hill’s twelfth win in NASCAR O’Reilly, and the first on a rutted track.

Race Phases

The Saturday race started with a peculiar incident, as a metal cover detached in the first lap. Corey Day collided with it, but thanks to exceptional handling of NASCAR rules, the Hendrick Motorsports team was able to replace the damaged radiator and recover lost laps before resuming competition on lap 10.

Hill dominated the first phase, winning ahead of Retzlaff, Mayer, Alfredo, Kvapil, Smith, Creed, Green, Gray, and Sawalich.

Second Phase

In the initial course of the second phase, Sammy Smith suffered two loss of control incidents, while Allgaier made contact with the wall. After a yellow flag, Gray and Retzlaff battled intensely, with Gray ultimately winning the phase.

Third Phase

On the restart, Retzlaff took the lead, but Kvapil ended up taking it away. The race entered a chaotic period, with more than 20 vehicles involved in an accident after Sam Mayer hit the wall.

After a stop to repair the wall, the chaos continued with Retzlaff running out of fuel while in second place. Finally, after some risky maneuvers, Hill launched ahead of Gray in the final moments and secured an exciting victory for Richard Childress Racing.
