The qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix was marked by an unexpected incident when Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen collided with the barriers at the first corner. This accident led to a red flag during the initial qualifying session.

Verstappen suffered his accident when he hit the brakes and experienced a lock-up at the rear axle of his vehicle. This caused him to lose control, resulting in an off-track excursion and a hard crash into the wall. Fortunately, the Dutch driver was able to exit the car without assistance.

After the incident, Verstappen confirmed that he was okay but showed signs of pain, shaking his hand and wrist. Replays of the moment of impact revealed that he did not let go of the steering wheel during the accident, which has raised concerns about his safety.

Motorsport experts, such as Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle, have emphasized that this incident cannot be attributed to driver’s error. According to him, the lock-up at the rear axle is not a fault of the driver but rather an unexpected technical issue.

Despite the setbacks, the interruption of the session allowed Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli to go out on track for the last seven minutes of the first qualifying session, after suffering a previous accident during the third practice session.

In statements before the qualifying, Verstappen had expressed optimism about his team’s performance, but acknowledged that they still had work to do to match the main competitors.
