Lewis Hamilton is not too bothered where he finishes in the F1 standings at the end of 2024 season, he’s just looking to do the best for Mercedes.

It hasn’t been the season that Mercedes’ Hamilton hoped for, especially since it is his last with the German F1 team. Such has been the year that he sits seventh in the drivers’ standings with 190 points – behind teammate George Russell (192) and only ahead of Sergio Perez (151).

Among the Top 4 teams, he is effectively second last. But it doesn’t bother him where he finishes in the drivers’ standings. He just wants to see-through the year and score as much as possible for Mercedes – even though the team too isn’t in the fight for the constructors’ championship laying fourth behind the clear Top 3.

The inconsistency has hurt their chances. The unpredictably is such that it may not be on pace in practice sessions, but suddenly in qualifying and or race, they are fast and fighting for Top 3. It happens the other way round too. And so, Hamilton just hopes that he can keep the car out of the barriers and score as much.

“I just put my focus on something else, I’m not fighting for the championship,” said Hamilton. “It doesn’t matter, really, where we finish in the championship. I don’t care if I finish ahead of George or behind George. It doesn’t make any difference to me. I just want to keep the car out the wall and try to score points if I can for the team, if I can finish, whatever.

“If they give me a car that doesn’t bounce off the track in the next few races, then hopefully we can get a better result. But yeah, I am looking forward to Christmas. Confident. I mean, it’s been a very turbulent year. I think we always arrive with confidence and with a positive mental attitude, but the car is just, I don’t know how, I’m sure it’s similar for the other drivers.

“But there’s glimpses of hope and then things it swing back and forth, whether it’s tyres, whether it’s the aero. So you never know what you’re going to get. I always feel like Forrest Gump when I say that! But then, yeah, I’m hoping the car…so there’s definitely potential within the car and we’re always just looking to fine tune it and hope that we can extract more from it,” summed up Hamilton.
