Dorna Sports along with Regional Government of Andalusia and the City Council of Jerez de la Frontera have decided to submit a proposal for mid-July start of 2020 MotoGP season.
The proposal which they want to submit to the Spanish Government for approval, states for the 2020 MotoGP season to start during July 17-19 weekend with the Spanish GP at Jerez. Subsequently, the second round will be held at the same venue on July 24-26.
However, that race will be named as Grand Prix of Andalusia. Additionally, they also wish to host a World Superbike round at Jerez during July 31 – August 2 weekend, making it three back-to-back race weekends at the same circuit to limit travel amid COVID-19 pandemic.
It is not clear but it seems more or less certain that they will host the races without fans and a limited number of personnel from the teams. It falls in line with what the FIA and F1 is planning for a July start of their 2020 season in Austria at Red Bull Ring.
The decision for a proposal was made through an electronic meeting between Juan Antonio Marín, Vice President of the Regional Government of Andalusia; Mamen Sanchez Díaz, Mayor of Jerez de la Frontera; and Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports.
MotoGP races until Finnish GP has been cancelled/postponed with Czech GP (August 7-9) being the next round as per the original 2020 schedule. In fact, the grand prix in Qatar, Germany, Netherlands and Finland has been cancelled all-together for 2020.
It remains to be seen as to how many MotoGP races they can stage in 2020 as COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreck havoc around the globe.
