James Vowles, team principal of Williams, has made it clear that the current cost cap regulations in Formula 1 are forcing the Grove outfit to focus on modernizing its facilities, to the detriment of the development of its car for the 2026 season.

After a difficult start to the campaign, marked by a heavier-than-expected vehicle and delays in its developments, Vowles has confirmed that the team is «very exposed» due to inherent shortcomings in its infrastructure. In statements made on «The Vowles Verdict» at the conclusion of the Hungarian Grand Prix, he explained: «The situation is strange, as we have felt vulnerable this winter due to many years of underinvestment in our facilities. The cost cap limits us to the resources available».

The large magnitude of insufficient investment in the past means that immediate performance improvements to the car must be relegated to a secondary priority behind long-term operational needs. Vowles added: «We are dedicating many resources to fixing these issues at the back, instead of focusing on the current performance of the vehicle».

The situation was evident at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Williams struggled with its speed, with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz finishing in 17th and 18th places, respectively, and two laps behind the leaders.

At the end of the first half of the 2026 season, Williams sits in ninth place in the constructors’ standings, with a total of 11 points. Vowles has committed to working on the improvement of the team in the future, despite current obstacles.
