Johann Zarco, rider of the LCR Honda team, has shared his satisfaction for an unexpectedly rapid recovery after an accident during the first lap of the Catalonia Grand Prix in early May. The Frenchman, who had been marked by an injury to two ligaments in his knee, is returning to training earlier than expected, aiming to compete again in MotoGP.
In a recent interview with Canal+, Zarco explained that his recovery has been “miraculous,” as two of the three ligaments are in good condition and do not require surgery. “It’s a real miracle,” he enthusiastically expressed.
The rider noted that the characteristics of his sport have contributed to his recovery. Unlike sports such as football or skiing, the wear on the joints is different in motorcycling. “If I had been told I needed surgery, while waiting for the intervention, it would have totally ruined my season. I’m very happy to escape that,” he commented.
The recovery will allow Zarco to resume his motorcycle training in early August, with the aim of returning to the track in good condition and confidence. His initial estimate is that he will probably not compete in the British Grand Prix in early August, but the option of the Aragón Grand Prix at the end of the month is more viable.
However, Zarco’s hope of returning to competition will not be without complications. In his first race back, the rider will have to serve a double long lap penalty for his involvement in the accident that caused his injury, a decision that was communicated to the MotoGP stewards during the German Grand Prix weekend.
In the interview, Zarco also reflected on the decisions he made that fateful day. He regretted going back on track after the initial accident and acknowledged that he should have been in the pits instead of continuing to compete.
