Zanardi remains serious but doctors starts sedation reduction process

Alex Zanardi

Former F1 and IndyCar racer Alessandro Alex Zanardi remains in a serious condition in neurological side but doctors have begun the process of reduction of sedation.

Its been nearly a month since Paralympic gold-medalist, Zanardi, had a collision with a truck head-on in Italy. He underwent three surgeries in Le Scotte hospital in Siena and has been in the intensive care ever since under artificial ventilation.

The Italian hospital updated about the third surgery on July 6 and since then it was a silence as they stated that bulletins will only resume when any significant change is seen in his health as per his family’s direction. A new update came through finally on July 17.

The hospital confirmed that they have started the process of reduction in his sedation but cautioned that his condition remains serious from neurological point of view. They say it will take few days to ascertain how Zanardi is responding to the new process.

The next bulletin will be shared next week as the statement added: “With reference to the clinical conditions of Alex Zanardi, hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Aou Senese, the health management, in agreement with the family of the sample, informs that the progressive reduction of sedo-analgesia has been started in these days.

“Following the reduction of sedation, it will take a few days for further evaluations on the patient by the multidisciplinary team that takes care of the athlete, to allow any continuation of his therapeutic and rehabilitative path.

“Currently, the cardio-respiratory and metabolic parameters remain stable, the neurological picture remains serious and the prognosis remains confidential. Further information on Alex Zanardi health conditions will be released next week in agreement with the family,” the statement summed up.
