James Vowles has signed an unspecified long-term contract to remain the F1 team principal of Williams Racing in their world championship quest.
After his long-time commitment at Mercedes, Vowles eventually left the team to join Williams in 2023 as its team principal. In the space of two F1 seasons, the Brit has taken up several key decisions, which included high-profile technical signings like Pat Fry and driver like Carlos Sainz.
The team has stepped up in performance as well with Alexander Albon becoming a mainstay. Despite the eyes on 2026, Williams is doing well in 2025 so far, sitting fifth in the standings. With Dorilton Capital completing five years since its buyout in August, they have put faith on Vowles for long-term.
The extent of his current deal is unspecified, but the bare minimum would be two to three F1 seasons. “We are thrilled that James has signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing and committed his future to completing the mission that we are on together,” said Matthew Savage.
“He has brought experience, energy and strategic leadership to the task of restoring Williams to the top step of the podium. We aren’t there yet but you can sense the momentum we are building at Grove and are excited about what lies ahead.”
And Vowles added: “I am delighted to sign a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing, which has felt like home from the moment I walked through the door. This iconic team has already given me some incredible memories and we are all united in our ambition to build on our legacy and win World Championships again. Over the past two years we have focused on fixing the foundations, and now have a platform to go for glory in the years to come.”
