Williams says co-incidence with cracked mirrors; talk second half of 2021

Williams reckon it is just co-incidence with cracked mirror they have had in three races of F1 2021, as they add about minor updates for rest of the season.

While everyone was pleased to see Williams back in the points in Hungarian GP for the first time in almost two years, there was one mishap earlier in the weekend. Nicholas Latifi suffered a cracked mirror for the second time this season.

He had a similar issue at Barcelona back in May, while teammate George Russell also had a mirror crack at Silverstone. Now, with respect, it is a rarity in the extreme for it to happen once in a season – three times and we are only 50% of the way through it, is odd.

When asked by FormulaRapida.net, whether it is just co-incidence or is there a problem in design, Williams Head of Vehicle Performance, Dave Robson, reckon the former. He thinks that it must be part of a bad batch of bits, which should be under control.

“I think it’s just coincidence there,” said Robson. “I don’t think there’s a fundamental problem with the design, it’s not changed for quite a while, so think it might just be a bad batch of bits, we’ll soon have that under control.”

Looking towards the second half, the race at Spa-Francorchamps will mark the marathon of races and Williams are on the up with confidence rising. The key question is now if they take a chance and make major changes to the cars or will they stick with a minor tweak here and there for the second part of the season.

Robson thinks it will be the latter, with nothing major left. They already tried some bits in Hungary and they are likely to put them in the car in the second half. “I think, there’s nothing major left to come, a few little bits and pieces,” he said. “There’s a few bits we’ve tried on Friday and Saturday in Hungary, that haven’t stayed on the car for the race.

“But they may come back in slightly different form later in the year. Otherwise, no, it’s about optimising what we’ve got and making the most of that, and yeah, there might be the odd little bit but nothing very much,” summed up Robson.
