Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing driver, expressed his satisfaction with the competitiveness shown during the Austrian Grand Prix of Formula 1, although he lamented the mechanical issues that hindered his battle for victory against George Russell.
With a renewed version of the Red Bull RB22, Verstappen had a notable performance in his home race, managing to overcome a setback during qualifying that left him in fifth place. In the competition, he initiated an intense battle with the Mercedes vehicles, trying to pressure Russell after getting past Lewis Hamilton, driver for Ferrari.
The Dutch driver decided to extend his pit stop strategy to better manage the tires, but this decision ultimately backfired, preventing him from making a real offensive to reach victory at the end of the 71 laps of the race.
The maneuverability difficulties at the rear of his vehicle, especially during the latter part of the race, complicated his situation. Nevertheless, Verstappen achieved his best result of the 2026 season, finishing in second place, which reflects the hard work of the team to improve the car.
“What I found satisfying is that this was the first time I felt capable of fighting for victory,” Verstappen commented. “The competition in the first half of the race was remarkable, but in the second half, I felt there was something wrong at the rear of the car, which made it difficult to manage the corners and traction.”
Finally, Verstappen positively assessed his team’s effort despite the adverse circumstances. “We have a long way to go and it’s a big step forward to feel that we can compete.”
