Piastri described as “bad” the idea that drivers could be influenced by algorithms that adapt throughout the race. This aspect implies that small variations in driver input can have a significant impact on energy management during the lap.
Verstappen, while not wanting to criticize the regulations too often, revealed that his initial concerns were not well received. “I’ve been talking about these regulations for a long time. At first, they said I was complaining, but more and more people are starting to see what doesn’t work,” the driver stated. His concern is not just about his personal performances but about the future of the sport.
The Dutch driver also made it clear that the perception of competition varies depending on the type of fan. Casual spectators enjoy the races on occasion, but those who understand more about the context see it differently. “A lot of people can say it’s been a great race, but I think that’s unrealistic. There are moments when we drive with low power and that is painful for me,” Verstappen added.
According to him, the best drivers can no longer make a difference. “Now it’s just a matter of how much energy you use. If you’re faster in a corner, you lose more in the next straight. That’s not how it should be. In the rest of the competitions, if you gain time in a corner, you should be able to keep it,” the driver commented.
Verstappen reaffirmed his observation that competition among teammates is tighter due to these restrictions. “Many times you can’t make clear differences, and that leads to very close battles,” he concluded.
The next big challenge for Verstappen will be at Hungaroring, a circuit that usually offers more opportunities to recover energy, although he does not expect this to drastically change the overall race situation.
