Frederic Vasseur says the culture at Red Bull is quite performant as they are used to being at the limit and also aggressive to secure results.
Even though the culture of Red Bull is dismissed by many for being very aggressive and volatile, it does ends them on the better side of the results. After a lull in their championship campaign, they fought back against Mercedes and beat them.
They even left Ferrari behind as the talk of a energy drinks company beating manufacturers came ringing again. The culture is perfomant as per Vasseur. He feels that they are not only aggressive with everything, but they know the limits too.
The combination is something that can be learnt from. Its been a year for Vasseur at Ferrari and he has had to do a lot since the start to bring the changes, whether it is on the personnel side and or in the culture or mindset side of the F1 team.
But he knows this is a no-end process as everyone continues to learn at every moment. “One year ago it was… ‘tough’ is not the right word, but it was quite a challenge,” said Vasseur. “I joined quite late and it was a huge wave of things to manage, to understand, to discover in a couple of weeks because it was four weeks before the launch and five or six before Bahrain [scene of the opening race].
“The first thing is to understand the team, and for this you need time and there is no secret. Now I think I am in a much more comfortable situation, I know almost everybody in the company, the system, and I have a better understanding of this and I think I am doing a good job, a better job than I did at Sauber. It’s a non-end process, F1, and if you have the feeling that you are in good shape, you are almost dead.
“You have a group of people working together for years, and when you arrive in this group, you need to understand how the group is working before taking any action or decision. My job was to back them in the fact we have to be aggressive, we have to take risks and be ambitious, and to not be scared of any incident or something like this.
“You always have to be at the limit and I think that this culture is where Red Bull is very performant for me because they are used to being at the limit, used to being aggressive on every single topic and we have to take this direction, but I think we did a good step forward,” summed up Vasseur.
