The Ricardo Tormo Circuit at Valencia is undergoing resurfacing work ahead of the 2023 MotoGP finale.

The Ricardo Tormo Circuit has started today the resurfacing works on the Grand Prix track, which will take place during a good part of the summer until the last week of August. The machines have already entered the runway to begin milling the entire surface, later the asphalting and painting of the runway will be carried out.

Over the last few weeks, planimetry topographic work has been carried out to identify potholes, irregularities, subsidence and small points of water accumulation that require treatment prior to resurfacing.

In this way, action will be taken especially at the exit of curves one, Jorge Martínez Aspar Curve , and 14, Adrián Campos Curve , with deeper milling and with the demolition of the current curbs and the construction of new ones that are wider and with a new format proposed by the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) and approved by the Automobile Federation.

Likewise, part of the drainage network will be renewed to guarantee the rapid drainage of water in case of rain and the prompt drying of the track. After the resurfacing, all the necessary surfaces will be repainted and the timing wiring and digital flags will be installed on the track that will host its first major event, the Fanatec GT World Challenge, on September 16 and 17.

The works pursue a fourfold objective: to repair the problems that have appeared on the track in recent years, to resolve wear on the surface layer, to increase safety levels and finally to improve the quality and spectacularity of the Cheste layout. The works imply work on an area of ​​more than 60,000 square meters , the entire Grand Prix track and some of the service roads that surround the track.

The asphalt that is going to be removed and renewed dates from the summer of 2012. Since then the Circuit has completed eleven competition seasons full of activity and with unforgettable moments such as Valentino Rossi’s farewell in 2021, Marc Márquez’s MotoGP titles in 2013 and 2017, that of Jorge Lorenzo in 2015 and last year that of Francesco Bagnaia.

Likewise, the Circuit hosted the only electric car world race to date, Formula E and has held other major events such as the European NASCAR events, the GT World Challenge or the popular German DTM. The sports director of the Circuit Ricardo Tormo Gabriel Berruga has highlighted that “the current asphalt has stood out for its quality in terms of grip both in dry and rainy conditions.

The new resurfacing will help us to continue improving drainage, water evacuation and asphalt durability to achieve the highest possible levels of safety”. In the last eleven years, the Ricardo Tormo Circuit has held a total of 136 race weekends with twelve Grand Prix of the Motorcycle World Championship . During this time, except for the periods in which the Circuit was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, the use of asphalt has been intensive, with an activity rate of close to 85%.
