The Anglo-American driver Sebastian Wheldon will make his debut in the FIA Formula 3 championship in 2027, after joining Trident Motorsport, where he will share a team with his Formula Regional rival, Kean Nakamura-Berta.
At just 17 years old, Wheldon achieved second place in the Formula Regional European Championship in 2026 while competing for MP Motorsport, following a last-minute switch from Prema. He won four races during the season, including a double victory in Zandvoort and at the season finale in Hockenheim, thus surpassing Nakamura-Berta in the standings.
Sebastian is the son of the aforementioned IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon, and has been a junior driver for Andretti since 2021. His single-seater career began in 2023 when he won the Skip Barber Formula Race Series in the United States. In 2024, he claimed second place in the YACademy Winter Series and finished third in the IndyCar support series, USF Juniors, with four wins.
Wheldon made the leap to Europe in 2025, competing with Prema in the Italian F4 and E4, where he failed to surpass Nakamura-Berta, nor the associated Mumbai Falcons team in the Emirates series.
Trident has been one of the most prominent teams in F3 since 2021, winning three consecutive drivers’ titles with Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli, and Rafael Camara. Although this year they had to settle for second place in the hands of Freddie Slater, their lineup of three cars remains one of the most sought after in the category.
Speaking about his move to F3, Wheldon acknowledges that “there is a lot of pressure, as I will be competing with one of the most successful teams in the category.” He also expresses: “I love taking on challenges and I will give my all to learn quickly and achieve good results. I am extremely grateful to TWG and Andretti Global for their support. I can’t wait for the next season to start. Let’s go!”
The team director Giacomo Ricci added: “We are thrilled to announce our agreement with Sebastian Wheldon for the 2027 season of the FIA Formula 3 championship. Sebastian is a driver who has shown consistent growth throughout his career, excelling both in the United States and Europe.”
Ricci concluded by stating that “his 2026 season in Formula Regional, where he finished in second place, confirmed his talent and ability to compete at the highest level. We are confident that Trident Motorsport represents the ideal environment for taking the next step in his promising career.
