Carlos Sainz admits he is going through a patch where nothing is clicking for him no matter how much he pushes, but he is trying to stay positive still.
After his switch from Ferrari to Williams, it was a big step in terms of fighting at the front and fighting in the midfield. He had to unlearn most of the things he learnt when racing for the Italian manufacturer, and relearn new things at Grove, which functions different to Maranello.
The resources are limited as well. But it is nothing that Sainz hasn’t done in the past. He has raced for multiple teams like Toro Rosso (now Visa Cash App RB), Renault (now Alpine), McLaren and Ferrari. Having experienced the transitions, it is not something new to him.
But things haven’t worked out for him in some way or the other. Even though he has points against his name, he hasn’t been 100% in the races and has missed out on things often. He admits going through a patch where nothing is working, no matter how much he tries to fix things.
He doesn’t know if it luck or something else, but he wants to remain positive still. Since joining Williams, Sainz has always noted about a 12-14 races timeline to get used to the new way of things. He is very close to that mark, but he is still finding his feet.
“You go through periods in drivers’ career where nothing seems to click,” said Sainz to media. “I am going through one of those periods where I don’t know if its bad luck or things not coming together but I am trying to stay positive thinking the pace in the car and my adaptation with the car has been strong, I feel at home in the car and I am pushing the team and myself forward with what I brought to Williams but for some reason the results are not clicking even though the lap time and pace is there.
“So I am trying to remain positive but it is one of those phases in the career of the driver where nothing seems to come together and I just need probably a good result to gather momentum into the season and hopefully I can deliver a strong second half because I am pretty sure that we are capable of a lot better than what we are doing right now.
“In qualifying in Canada, I had an impeding of three or four tenths and I was 20 millisecond of Q2, in Barcelona I was 10 thousands of Q2, it is all in the details and that’s why in Formula 1, you need details, small things to go towards you and right towards you, so again a bit of a scrappy 2 or 3 weekends in a row.
“Before that I had a strong of qualifying with very good race pace but not a good Sunday executions, now it seems like quali hasn’t gone our way but still some Sundays we are not executing well, so trying to put everything together, trying to have a lot of meetings back in the factory, to try and sort out all of the things before we are able to perform with a potential that the car and myself we have to, to start putting weekends together. So, a lot of homework still going on at Grove,” summed up Sainz.
