Sacha Fenestraz, winner of the Formula Renault Eurocup title in 2017, will move up another step in his career as he tackles the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2018. The Franco-Argentinean who is backed by the Renault Sport Academy because of his title will continue his association with Carlin, the team for which he raced in the Macao Grand Prix.
Fenestraz will compete in his fourth season in single-seaters when he races in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Since its revival in 2012 the series has revealed the talent of several Formula 1 drivers such as Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen.
In 2017, Sacha tested the waters in Formula 3 on several occasions in both private practice and races. His outings in the European Championship event at the Nürburgring, and in the Macao Grand Prix crowned with a superb seventh place, helped him to make his choice for 2018.
It’s also on the basis of this experience that he wants to continue his association with Carlin. The British team that helped Lando Norris to the title in 2017 will entrust one of its Dallara-Volkswagens to the young Franco-Argentinean.
While awaiting the start of the season, which will not kick off until 12-13 May in Pau, Sacha will undergo an intensive training programme due to his incorporation into the Renault Sport Academy because of his title in the Eurocup Formula Renault in 2017.
The FIA Formula 3 European Championship comprises 10 events, each with three races, in eight countries and visits five Formula 1 circuits. At the end of the season Sacha will also race in the Macao Grand Prix for the second time in his career.
Sacha Fenestraz: “Right from my opening laps in the car I really liked the way the Formula 3 handled and its aerodynamic efficiency. So I’m very happy to be racing in the 2018 European Formula 3 Championship and to continue my adventure with Carlin. The team has a very professional approach to racing and you very quickly understand why it has achieved such results in all single-seater categories! I will gain a great deal of experience in this environment. My aim next season is to be the first of the rookies and to obtain the best possible result in the championship.”
Trevor Carlin: “It’s with great pleasure that we can confirm Sacha joins the team for a full season campaign in the FIA Formula Three European Championship next year. Sacha has raced with us once in the championship already where he was extremely impressive in qualifying particularly. We were pleased to work with him again in Macau where as a rookie he was extremely impressive and finished the race very well – we know that he has the potential to do great things on track as he has already proven in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Championship so we have no doubt that he will be competitive from the word go as he hits the track next year.”
