Williams’ George Russell wants to score points on pure pace if it happens in 2020 F1 season rather than get it by luck as Nicholas Latifi looks at doing things his own way.
While Russell dominated his Williams teammate Robert Kubica in 2019 F1 season performance wise, he was still beaten on the points table, where the Polish racer scored the one point in Germany, with the Brit getting none.
The circumstances in which Kubica scored the point, is not what Russell wants to do – at least not on a consistent basis. He feels that he is fine about not scoring at all, as he wishes that he would rather do so using pure pace.
“Obviously, F1 is about scoring points to get on the table, but I think the most important thing is having a car that we can compete more week after week, rather than just scoring,” said Russell, when asked about his first target in 2020, by FormulaRapida.net.
“I could have scored a point here or there in 2019, but it would have been out of luck, and we don’t want to do that. We need to do it on pure pace.” Claire Williams is optimistic that FW43 will be an improvement but it remains to be seen how they perform.
The team is under tremendous pressure to live upto the standard it has set. Interestingly, Russell will be most experienced driver at Williams in 2020, with Latifi being a rookie and the likes of Dan Ticktum, Jamie Chadwick and Roy Nissany, only starting out.
Looking at 2020, Russell’s teammate to-be, Latifi, spoke about how he hopes to extract the most from the car, rather than solely focus on beating the Brit. The Canadian knows that the Mercedes junior will be tough to challenge but he looking to do his own thing.
“I’m gonna try and do my own thing, I’m my own person, my own driver,” said Latifi to media including FormulaRapida.net. “But yeah, obviously George is one of the highest rated junior drivers, I’m very much looking forward to going up against him.
“For sure he’ll be a good benchmark, good reference for me, in the beginning part, to learn. For sure he’s not gonna be a rookie, so I assume he will have some advantage, but yeah I think we’re gonna work very well together.
“And where the results are, where the performance is going to be, it’s difficult to say, but regardless my goal is gonna be to just try and extract the maximum performance [out of] whatever package we have.”
