The setting of the IndyCar Series is immersed in one of the most unpredictable driver markets in recent years, and Rinus VeeKay navigates this situation with notable confidence. At a time when the traditional summer ‘silly season’ is in full swing, many significant changes are already reconfiguring the grid for the upcoming season.
This week, the racing community was surprised by the announcement of Scott Dixon’s departure, six-time IndyCar champion, from Chip Ganassi Racing, after 24 years with the team. Simultaneously, the winner of the Indianapolis 500, Felix Rosenqvist, has turned into an available driver in the market, while Marcus Armstrong has confirmed his continuity with Meyer Shank Racing, moving from the #66 Honda to the #60, currently occupied by Rosenqvist, starting in 2027.
VeeKay, currently in his seventh season in IndyCar with the #76 of Juncos Hollinger Racing, has shown awareness of the intensity of this situation. “I think I saw this coming for a while. I’ve been very attentive and it is undoubtedly one of the craziest ‘silly seasons’ so far. There are only 14 or 15 confirmed cars right now; so there are a lot of open spots,” the driver stated.
In the first 10 races of the season, VeeKay has managed to present a solid curriculum to attract potential offers or to negotiate his renewal with Juncos Hollinger. With three to ten, including a notable fourth place at World Wide Technology Raceway, he has shown his potential.
Regarding whether recent additions have increased the pressure to close deals, the 25-year-old Dutch driver remains calm. “Normally, we see how signings start to move in June and July. But it is true that we will see some pieces fall this week,” he commented.
Despite the constant changes, he and his management team seem to have a clear plan. “We have been working to find the best decision for both next year and the future. With all these new developments, the perspectives change, but in the end, I think we have a good idea of what our options are for next year,” VeeKay added.
