Lewis Hamilton won the 32nd pole of his career, and equaling in number of pole positions with Nigel Mansell. Second place to Riccardo – his best starting position in Formula 1 racing career. Nico Rosberg is third.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team): «Weekend in Melbourne going interesting. Weather complicated qualification – it was a real challenge, the situation with the tire choice was not easy – sometimes we just do not know what tires to choose. The first time I drive a new car to the limit on a wet track, but it is perfectly manageable – I’m pleased with the work team. Today’s pole – fantastic result for us. It was fun, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race. We will do our best and then see the developments.

I am proud that brought Mercedes-Benz hundredth pole in Formula 1. Since the debut in 2007, I drove the car only with Mercedes engine. Our whole team did a great job, solving problems associated with the transition to the new regulations. I’m also incredibly happy that equaled Nigel Mansell by number of pole positions. I am indebted to all the great people I worked with throughout my career»

Daniel Ricciardo (Infiniti Red Bull Racing): «Qualifying was interesting, and the weather added intrigue! In the first session, all went well, but as soon as it started to rain, we first had to drive these cars to the limit on a wet track. Was not easy, but at the same time having fun – I’m glad the second position!

My race engineer constantly reported that a decent pace that we are fighting for pole position – in short, a great first qualification as part of Red Bull Racing! Two weeks ago, there were no signs to us the first row of the grid, so I am very satisfied!»

Nico Rosberg (Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team): «Qualifying was so difficult. Third place at the start – not the best option, but it is quite normal. Our car is fast on the course – that gives confidence. If we manage a good start, I’ll have a great chance to compete for the highest score. Will be an interesting race because of the need to save fuel and to watch wear rubber, so tomorrow may be surprises»
