Raul Fernández has achieved his first pole position in MotoGP during the Indonesian Grand Prix held on Saturday. The Trackhouse Racing rider clocked a time of 1:28.562, surpassing Marco Bezzecchi’s Aprilia by just one tenth, while Marc Márquez finished fourth, ahead of championship rival Jorge Martín.
Initially, Bezzecchi set a time of 1:28.961 that left him in provisional pole position at the start of Q2. Fernández, who had been the fastest during Friday’s sessions, managed the second-best time with a margin of 0.211 seconds over Bezzecchi. Márquez also stood out with a good time, placing third in the early laps.
Throughout the sessions, Fernández began to stand out on the timing boards, improving his record to take the lead. Despite Bezzecchi’s attempts to make a fast lap, an accident involving Fermin Aldeguer forced a stoppage, preventing the Italian rider from improving his final time.
Márquez played a follow strategy, trailing behind Martín, which alerted the Aprilia rider to his presence. Márquez managed to improve his time to finish fourth, relegating Martín to fifth place.
Aldeguer managed to stay in sixth place despite the accident, while Ai Ogura, who suffered a finger fracture on Friday, recovered to finish seventh on the grid. Alex Márquez rounded out the top eight, while Pedro Acosta and Francesco Bagnaia completed the top 10.
In Q1, the situation became complicated with multiple crashes, including riders Ogura, Enea Bastianini, and Jack Miller. While Ogura secured his spot in Q2, the crashes proved costly for Bastianini, who finished 14th.
The Indonesian GP promises to be exciting, with key riders positioned to battle for victory. All eyes will be on Fernández, who will seek to capitalize on his first pole position in a top-tier championship like MotoGP.
