Pirelli Motorsport completed an interrupted F1 2026 wet weather tyre test at Magny-Cours, with Jack Doohan driving a Alpine.
Day 1 –
Today, the prototype rain tyres for 2026 were scheduled to make their track debut at Magny-Cours, these tyres running the same 18” rims as the current generation, but with slightly smaller width and external diameter, on both the front and rear axles. The test is taking place in collaboration with the BWT Alpine F1 Team which brought along a modified version of the A523, adapted to accept the new size of wheel rim.
Driving duties were entrusted to the Australian, Jack Doohan, this year’s reserve driver for the French team, who is being promoted to the role of race driver as from next season. Unfortunately, a technical problem on the car reduced the time spent on track: Doohan completed a total of 47 laps, the best in a time of 1’16”461, set on slick tyres.
Dry weather tyres were used at first, before switching to testing the intermediates and extreme wets on the artificially watered track. Testing continues at Magny-Cours tomorrow, again with Doohan behind the wheel.
Day 2 –
Finally a high mileage day at Magny-Cours (France) on the second day of a test of Pirelli wet weather tyres for the 2026 season, with BWT Alpine F1 Team providing the car and driver. Jack Doohan was at the wheel of an A523, modified to accept the size of wheel rim to be used as from 2026. The Australian did 106 laps, all on an artificially watered track, the quickest in a time of 1’27”352.
Today’s work thus partially made up for time lost yesterday. The programme focused mainly on assessing prototype extreme wet tyres, with a few runs on intermediates. This was the third and final test session, all of them lasting two days, which Pirelli has completed this year, aimed at the 2026 season. Prior to this one, there were sessions at the Barcelona and Mugello tracks, running dry weather tyres.
These tests will resume in 2025, while on Tuesday 10 December at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, there will be a test for all teams to assess for the first time the final version of the dry weather tyres for the 2025 season.
