Pirelli Motorsport undertakes another 2025 F1 tyre test with Ferrari drivers, this time it was at the Mugello circuit.
Day 1 –
Pirelli’s fifth development test of the year. After Barcelona, Jerez de la Frontera, Suzuka and Le Castellet, this week, Formula 1’s Global Tyre Supplier is in Italy, at the Mugello circuit for two days of testing, working with Scuderia Ferrari HP and its two race drivers.
Today, at the circuit owned by the Maranello marque, Charles Leclerc was behind the wheel of the SF-24, tasked with carrying out comparative tests of different compounds and constructions aimed at 2025. Given the nature of this particular track, particular attention was paid to the hardest compounds in the range planned for next season, with the main strategic objective of reducing overheating.
It rained in the afternoon, which meant that intermediate tyres were required, thus continuing the work that had begun at the Paul Ricard circuit. By the end of the day, Leclerc had completed 120 laps, equivalent to 630 kilometres. The work continues tomorrow when Carlos Sainz will be take over driving duties.
Day 2 –
Pirelli’s fifth test session of the season ended this afternoon at the Mugello circuit. Once again, the work focused on development of new compound and construction solutions for next year. As was the case a fortnight ago at Le Castellet, Formula 1’s Global Tyre Supplier was again working with Scuderia Ferrari HP.
On the track owned by the Maranello marque, Carlos Sainz was behind the wheel today. The Spaniard completed 135 laps at the wheel of an SF-24, equivalent to 707 kilometres, working on a comparison of the different prototypes available with the main aim of looking at reducing the phenomenon of tyre overheating.
“First of all, I want to thank Scuderia Ferrari HP once again for their cooperation in completing this test,” commented Pirelli’s Director of Motorsport, Mario Isola. “We are going through a very busy part of the season right now and to once again be able to count on their support, especially with its two races drivers is a major achievement.
“For us, these two days have been very valuable, running on this beautiful Mugello track, which provides tyres with a very stern test, given that it’s configuration features so many long, fast corners, which is the ideal scenario for evaluating solutions for the hardest compounds.
“The data gathered over these 1337 kilometres here are very interesting and will allow us to begin to narrow the field of what might be the most effective solutions, so we can finalise our choices over the coming months. Now, our test programme will resume in benefiting from running at Grand Prix tracks in the days immediately following the event: in fact, we will test at Silverstone following the British Grand Prix and then at Spa after the Belgian Grand Prix.”
