Oliver Solberg, Swedish driver for Toyota, has taken the lead in the Rally of Portugal after the first day of competition. This edition, the first in the purely gravel calendar of the World Rally Championship, has been marked by a high level of competition among the drivers.
Solberg completed two gravel stages and one super special stage on asphalt with a margin of 3.4 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Frenchman Adrien Fourmaux from Hyundai. The veteran Sébastien Ogier from Toyota, after a slow start, currently occupies third place, 7.2 seconds behind the race leader.
In Solberg’s words, “I tried to be clean and relaxed. We know there won’t be service until Friday, so we don’t want to take any risks. We had a good start, but there is a long way ahead, with each day presenting its own challenges.”
Hyundai arrived at this event with high hopes, taking the opportunity to exploit the virtues of their i20 N model on gravel. Additionally, they introduced an engine update to improve their performance during the competition.
The day began with Fourmaux setting the best time in the opening stage, achieving his fourth stage win of the season with just 0.1 seconds over Toyota’s Elfyn Evans, who delivered a notable performance despite opening the road. Driver Solberg missed the stage victory by just 0.2 seconds, showing a very competitive pace over the 15.08 km of this first phase.
Despite the difficulties, Hyundai’s Dani Sordo registered the fourth-best time, 1.2 seconds behind his teammate Fourmaux, while Ogier had issues with the balance of his vehicle, lagging around five seconds behind the front runners.
On the other hand, M-Sport-Ford opted to prepare their cars with hard tires to save the soft tire units for the rainy conditions forecast for the weekend. This strategy posed challenges in achieving a good level of grip.
By the second stage, consisting of 20.24 km, Solberg stood out, achieving first place after a great performance, improving his previous time and surpassing his rivals. Ogier, for his part, found a significant improvement, finishing the day in fourth overall.
In summary, with a total of seven stages scheduled for Friday summing 96.22 km, the drivers prepare for another day of intense competition at the Rally of Portugal.
