NASCAR has announced significant changes to its tire policy for wet conditions ahead of the upcoming race weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. This modification will allow teams and drivers greater control over their strategies in the event of a race with rain or a wet track.
Until now, only NASCAR decided when it was the right time to switch from wet tires to slicks. This rule has been modified, and from now on, teams will have the freedom to choose the type of tire they want to use when the track is considered wet by the organization.
The new regulations stipulate that all vehicles must start the race with the same type of tire, either slick or wet, designated by NASCAR. Once the race begins, if a yellow flag is issued for rain and the track is deemed wet, teams will be able to decide whether to continue with wet tires or switch to slicks. This adds a new level of strategy and dynamism to the races, which has already been shown to significantly vary the competition conditions.
This move has been well received by the garage community and is considered an appropriate response to the concerns raised during the race in New Hampshire on August 23, where tire decisions had sparked debate. On that occasion, driver Shane van Gisbergen had built up a lead of over seven seconds before NASCAR intervened with a non-competitive stop.
NASCAR’s CEO, Steve O’Donnell, stated that the new measures reflect opinions gathered from both fans and industry professionals. The flexibility in tire decisions in wet conditions aims to make the races more exciting and improve the spectacle for fans, while encouraging teams to adapt their strategies according to current conditions.
Among the tracks that will be able to use wet tires are Bristol, Iowa Speedway, New Hampshire, Phoenix, Martinsville, North Wilkesboro, and Richmond.
