The Watkins Glen International circuit will undergo significant changes this weekend as NASCAR has decided to introduce new limitations regarding runoff areas. Drivers will no longer be able to overtake as easily at the first corner during starts and restarts, thanks to the construction of a new physical barrier.

At the exit of the first corner, four tire packagings will be installed. The first is located 11 feet from the competition track, the second at 9 feet, and the last two at 6 feet. They are spaced 180 feet apart, and drivers will find it more challenging to venture beyond the outside curve.

Regarding the exit of the Carousel, which is now part of the revised design, a linear tire packaging has been placed. At the beginning of this section, it is located 20 feet from the track, but it gradually moves closer to just 5 feet. This area was the scene of a serious accident last year during the NASCAR O’Reilly race, which involved several vehicles and a long cleanup period.

The implementation of these new limiters is a response to recent incidents where drivers have been involved in collisions while trying to return to the track in a constrained space and with a guardrail nearby. Although tire packagings have caused serious accidents in the past, their configuration this time has been designed to address these concerns.

An unknown aspect will be the impact these packagings will have at the exit of the first corner and the behavior of the drivers in this area. It is expected that those who exceed these new limitations may face penalties, as they will be monitored more closely than ever as they negotiate the corners against their rivals.
