MotoGP is working on the possibility of holding the inauguration of the 2027 season in Rio de Janeiro. At this event, the presentation of the new 850cc bikes of the championship is expected.
The Brazilian city is one of the options being considered by the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MotoGP SEG), which holds the commercial rights to the world championship. This new location could replace Kuala Lumpur, which hosted the 2026 edition of the event.
Initially, Miami was the leading candidate for this inauguration, given the championship owner’s ambition to expand its presence in the United States. However, according to Motorsport sources, Rio de Janeiro has become the main option to host this event that will mark the start of the 2027 campaign.
Although agreements with local organizers have not been formalized, several MotoGP teams are already planning to travel to Brazil early next year. This edition would be the third collective season launch of MotoGP, following the inaugural ceremony in Bangkok before the 2025 season and this year’s event in Kuala Lumpur.
Initially, Singapore had been chosen as the destination for 2026, but logistical difficulties led organizers to keep the event in the Malaysian capital, where preseason testing began shortly thereafter.
From a commercial perspective, Rio is a logical option, especially after MotoGP‘s return to Brazil last year and the promotion of Diogo Moreira to the premier category. However, it presents a significant logistical challenge for teams during one of the busiest periods of the year, when schedules offer little room for maneuver.
The exact date has not yet been set, but it is known that MotoGP SEG’s preferred plan is to organize the event as soon as possible, before the first preseason test in Sepang, which is scheduled for the last week of January. This would require riders to interrupt their winter preparations to fly to South America, before making the long trip back to Malaysia a few days later.
In this scenario, teams would need to transport their prototypes to Brazil in advance, followed by the necessary technical personnel to prepare and maintain the bikes. Riders and upper management would arrive last.
One of the main complications would be integrating each manufacturer’s presentation into an already busy calendar. These independent presentations are very valuable to sponsors, as they allow teams to enjoy exclusive media exposure, without sharing the spotlight with their rivals.
The calendar would remain busy even if the collective inauguration took place after the two preseason tests and before the first round of the 2027 season, which is expected to take place on the first weekend of March, probably in Thailand.
