Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 world champion driver, has expressed his concern that Mercedes could face a difficult season finale due to the rapid growth of McLaren. After the Dutch Grand Prix, Rosberg highlighted Lando Norris‘ performance as a warning sign for his former team.
In an intervation on Sky Sports F1, Rosberg praised Norris’s speed at Zandvoort. Even though the British driver chose not to pit during a virtual safety period, he managed to maintain his position against his rivals. “Lando was flying on the hard tires, being between seven and eight tenths faster per lap than George Russell in a similar situation. His speed was incredible,” Rosberg said.
The constant improvement of McLaren has made Mercedes, the current leader of the constructors’ championship, concerned. Rosberg added: “Mercedes will be worried now about this McLaren speed. They are the team to beat and have developed their car faster than anyone else. This could lead to a really complicated finish for Mercedes.”
Norris, who achieved his second victory of the season at Zandvoort, has positioned himself in fourth place in the drivers’ championship, with 159 points, just 24 points behind Lewis Hamilton and 83 points behind the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli. Norris’s brilliant performances have generated conversations about the possibility of a comeback for the title, although he himself insists on the importance of staying focused one race at a time.
“It may sound boring, but every race is a world,” he said after his victory. “It doesn’t make sense to think that far ahead. Now I need to focus on enjoying a good rest before Monza.”
