The team principal of McLaren, Andrea Stella, has explained the reasons behind the order given to Oscar Piastri to let Lando Norris pass during the United States Grand Prix of Formula 1. This decision was made when Piastri encountered difficulties in maintaining pace, losing approximately one second per lap to the race leader, Kimi Antonelli.
Although Piastri and Norris started the race from the fourth row of the grid, they were unable to compete against the Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari cars during qualifying. The first seven laps of the race revealed a slower pace from Piastri, who not only couldn’t keep up with the leader but was also being overtaken by George Russell.
After Norris expressed over the radio that he felt stuck behind his teammate, McLaren requested Piastri to let Norris pass, a move that took place at the first corner of the eighth lap. This allowed Norris to quickly pull away, increasing his gap to four seconds in just seven laps.
Stella justified the decision by explaining that, throughout the weekend, it had been clear that Norris was faster than Piastri, especially on a circuit where Norris excels, while Piastri was facing challenges. Moreover, Stella emphasized that the race strategy aimed to maximize McLaren’s chances following the incident between their drivers in Singapore, reaffirming the importance of teamwork to improve results.
Race Strategy
McLaren opted for a one-stop strategy during the race, hoping to compete with other top teams. While Norris held second place until lap 46, he eventually fell to third place behind Ferrari drivers and Max Verstappen, finishing in fifth place. Piastri, on the other hand, managed to secure seventh place.
Stella explained that adapting to track conditions proved vital for executing their strategy, and that, despite not encountering a safety car, the deployment of hard tires seemed viable for achieving a good result. McLaren is in a moment of reflection, seeking improvements for future competitions, both in performance and in other areas of the vehicle.
