McLaren will roll out updates to its MCL40 car during the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend. These improvements include a new front wing design that is also expected to be part of the 2027 package.
After achieving notable victories in Hungary and Zandvoort, the team has seen its competitiveness decline recently, despite new updates introduced in Baku and Austin.
Expected improvements
During the last four qualifying sessions, McLaren has occupied fourth place, with a margin of 0.511 seconds from the pole position. The technical director of aerodynamics, Peter Prodromou, commented on the improvements that will be made: ‘We have some updates coming on the front wing, the rear wing, and some floor components as part of our normal development cycle.’
Prodromou added that the goal is to close the gap with competitors and improve performance in the remaining races, hoping that the Sao Paulo circuit can benefit their updates.
The road to the future
Currently, McLaren is 17 points behind Red Bull, which occupies third place in the championship, with 59 points obtained in the last five races compared to the 152 points accumulated by their rivals. However, driver Lando Norris achieved a respectable fifth place in the GP of Mexico, maintaining hope for improvement in the next event.
Despite the challenges, Norris is aware of the team’s needs: ‘We know where we need to improve, it just takes time. We hope to have a better day in Brazil.’ The new features will provide learning that will contribute to preparation for the 2027 season.
