The news of Gianpiero Lambiase’s departure from Red Bull Racing has been confirmed by the father of the current champion, Jos Verstappen, who revealed that both he and Max were aware of this decision before it became effective.
Lambiase, who has been a race engineer for Red Bull, has signed a contract with McLaren starting in 2028, a step in his career that will allow him to take the position of competition director, reporting directly to the team principal, Andrea Stella.
Jos Verstappen, in an interview with the media RaceXpress, commented that they had known Lambiase’s direction for some time. “We knew it would happen and we also knew when,” he explained. “We understand it’s a great opportunity for him, so we encourage him to move forward.”
Max Verstappen had previously made it clear that he preferred to work exclusively with Lambiase and would consider leaving the sport if he left. In a statement to Ziggo Sport in 2021, he said: “If he stops, I will too.”
Although Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, he has expressed that he could reconsider his continuity if the new regulations are not satisfactory to him. Recently, he described the cars under these rules as “Formula E with steroids,” hinting at his concerns about the direction the competition is taking.
