Marc Márquez has described his performance during the Indonesia GP as a “dream”, as he managed not to lose points to Jorge Martín on a circuit he considers “the worst” for him. In the two races held in Mandalika, he finished first in the sprint race and sixth on Sunday.
The Ducati Team rider revealed that he approached the weekend with a cautious mindset, given his negative history on this track, where he had never completed a race. With 22 points accumulated, the result has been celebrated as a victory, especially considering that only Marco Bezzecchi managed more points (25) during the event.
Upon arriving in Indonesia, Márquez was motivated by his position in the championship, where Jorge Martín led by just two points. In the end, Martín left Lombok with no points, which improves the situation for Márquez.
“If you had told me on Thursday that I would lose three points to Bezzecchi and tie with Martín throughout the weekend, I would have said it was a dream,” he commented. “We have been consistent throughout the race, and although we suffered, especially in the second part, I am happy with the result.”
The Saturday race started with a crash that took out two favorite riders, allowing Márquez to push for a victory. On Sunday, the Aprilia bikes and Jorge Martín dominated, taking the top spots prominently.
“We knew that tire wear would be a factor, and I had to push a lot,” he added. “The worst is knowing that at first the laps weren’t coming out as we expected, but the important thing is that I was able to be the first Ducati and save the situation.”
The Spanish rider also reflected on his ability to overcome his previous failures at the circuit, noting that he had to focus on the present after never having successfully finished a race here before. With Bezzecchi winning his first race since May, Márquez believes that the title fight remains among three riders, including the two Aprilia riders, despite the points gap favoring Martín.
