René Rast has competed a very intelligent Race 2 that allowed him to achieve his first victory in DTM, plus the lead of drivers’ standings. Audi driver with only four laps to go overtook Audi mate, Ekström who finished second. The BMW of Martin completes the podium.
René Rast who started from pole position kept the lead of the race at the start, followed by the Audi teammate Nico Müller.
Pit stops were made mainly in the early laps, but they were Maxime Martin and Mike Rockenfeller who stopped first. Meanwhile on the track, Jamie Green was fighting for third place with the 2016 DTM champion Marco Wittmann.
When everyone had already made the mandatory pit stop, Mattias Ekström was the one who took the lead ahead of Rast and Martin. But the race wasn’t over yet, because Rast overtook Ekström at the end, getting his first victory in DTM. Martin kept third position to secure his seventh podium finish in DTM.
Off podium battle, it is highlighted the comeback of Jamie Green after the pit stop, overtaking the winner of yesterday, Paul Di Resta and Marco Wittmann – who finally retired, to finish in fifth place.
Nico Müller finished fourth despite trying the manoeuvre on Martin in the final laps. Completing points positions are Timo Glock, Robert Wickens, Gary Paffet and Mike Rockenfeller.
In drivers’ championship standings, thanks to the victory from Rast and the retirement from Lucas Auer, Rast becomes the new leader of the series, one point ahead of Austrian driver. In third place only five points down is Ekström while Jamie Green is fourth just eight points behind.
The next round of the championship will be held from June 30 to July 2 in the always special and decisive Norisring in Nuremberg (Germany).
