Lone Star Racing has announced its participation in the full 2027 season of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) class, expanding its previous role as an exclusive competitor in the Michelin Endurance Cup.
This Texas-based team, founded by Dan Knox and led by A.J. Petersen, will showcase the #80 Mercedes-AMG GT3, featuring drivers Lin Hodenius, a young Dutch talent, and James Roe, a veteran Irish motorsport competitor.
Since its inception, Lone Star Racing has accumulated 29 races within the WeatherTech championship and has completed the Michelin Endurance Cup series over the past three seasons. The 2027 season will be the first time they attempt a full-time commitment.
Petersen expressed his excitement for this new step: ‘We are very excited to start our first full season in the championship. Our goal has always been to reach this point, and with the right support, we hope to build a promising future.’
The decision to expand comes after a standout 2026 season where the team achieved notable results, including two finishes in sixth and fourth place in two of the Michelin Endurance Cup races. Drivers Andrews, Hodenius, and Roe, supported by factory driver Luca Stolz, have shown consistent performance.
Hodenius, who comes from the Formula 4 scene, commented on his excitement to continue with the team: ‘I have seen significant progress during our first season together and look forward to achieving more success in 2027. Working with a dedicated team like Lone Star Racing is a great opportunity.’
On the other hand, Roe, who has been competing in various IMSA categories, including a stint in LMP2, stated that this full season is key to building the necessary team chemistry: ‘With a full-season commitment, we will be able to work together more effectively and maximize our potential.’
Fans will have the chance to meet Knox, Petersen, and Roe at the SEMA Show event in Las Vegas, where they will make an appearance at the trade show.
