The Aston Martin team driver, Lance Stroll, has highlighted that both he and his partner Fernando Alonso have found themselves in a peculiar situation during the Formula 1 season, referring to it as a personal “Aston Martin championship” following a disastrous start to the 2026 season.

These results have left the team at the bottom of the overall standings after three races, exploring various issues, from chassis to power unit, within a very unstable management structure.

Among the most discussed obstacles is the use of the Honda power unit, which has suffered from excessive vibrations, causing battery failures and limiting track mileage for the Silverstone team.

During the Japanese Grand Prix, Stroll had to retire after 30 laps due to a water pressure problem, although he enjoyed the race competing with Alonso, even though they were in the last positions.

Stroll made a remarkable overtaking maneuver on Alonso at the beginning of the race, and also passed Valtteri Bottas from the Cadillac team during an economical tire change, although it did not have significant meaning in the context of the race.

After the competition, Stroll told F1 TV: “It hasn’t been great, but I enjoyed the race with Fernando in our little Aston Martin championship. Suzuka is always a beautiful track to drive, so I enjoyed my laps despite our slowness”.

The Canadian driver noted that the vibrations were not entirely acceptable, and he struggled to identify any progress in his AMR26 car since the beginning of the season in Melbourne.

For his part, Alonso found a more positive aspect, as he managed to complete the race for the first time this year, having only finished 21 laps in Australia and retiring after 32 laps in Shanghai.

The two-time champion stated: “We arrived in Australia with 100% certainty that we wouldn’t finish the race; the following week in China, with 95% conviction that we wouldn’t finish. Now, in the third race, we’ve been able to finish”.

This small progression in the team’s pace is encouraging, and Alonso hopes it will motivate both factories to continue improving.

The driver also commented that the vibrations were “more manageable” during the Japanese race, acknowledging Honda’s efforts, which was celebrating a significant event at its home track.

Alonso concluded: “We know they are working very hard, and that is a sign that shows our commitment and the team’s unity to improve together”.
