Mike Krack says since the start of the 2022 F1 season, Aston Martin has focused on improving three key areas and there has been a step up.
For Aston Martin, they have had a trying and tough season to say the least. A lot of investment has gone into the Silverstone based outfit. However, at the start of the season, they lost team boss Otmar Szafnauer to rival team Alpine, stepping up so and back to F1 was Krack who has a wealth of experience.
A tough baptism for the Luxembourger as it was a sluggish start for the outfit. But over the last number of races, points have been earned by both drivers so much so that with speed being of the essence, their straight line speed has been noticed and noted, particularly McLaren driver Lando Norris, not just that but the Brit even reckons Aston Martin have overtaken the Woking outfit.
Team Principal Krack is pleased to hear such positive comments but with another 13 Grands Prix to go, it is really one race at a time. “It’s nice to hear that from a rival like Lando,” he said. “But I think we need to keep our feet on the ground. You’re right that we improved from where we started. But there’s still a long way to go.”
However, the team have improved and that goes without saying. Since the Spanish GP four races ago, the team made changes but Krack himself slightly dismisses this as he ascertained Aston Martin have really looked to make improvements from day one.
“It’s not only since Barcelona,” said Krack. “So basically, from the beginning, there were three areas where we really focused on. One was weight; one was giving the driver feedback that they were not having, or not having enough. And the third one was obviously, aerodynamics, improving it as much as we could”.
“And there’s still a long way to go. But we tried to work our way up, continue working hard in the same areas, as we have done so far. And then we see where we end up,” summed up Krack. It is step by step but they are getting there.
There has been a lot of frustration for them particularly Sebastian Vettel’s practice pace and subsequent race result which was a pity but the signs are good and there is progress, slight but they are headed in the right direction. With Silverstone this weekend, the team’s home Grand Prix, what better place to continue the progress which has been there all season from day one and achieve a top five or even better result.
