Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes driver and current championship leader, has achieved a notable victory at the Grand Prix of Spain. This victory, however, has been surrounded by controversy, as commentator and former IndyCar driver, James Hinchcliffe, highlighted that Antonelli’s success may leave a sense of frustration, as he competed against a Lando Norris with a faster car.
Antonelli secured his eighth victory of the 2026 season at the debut of the Madring circuit, expanding his lead in the standings with 81 points over his teammate George Russell. The key to his victory was a virtual safety car that allowed him to make a more economical pit stop.
Norris, who started from pole, established a clear advantage during the early laps. However, when the virtual safety car was deployed just after Norris passed the pit entrance, Antonelli was able to capitalize on the situation and made a quicker stop. When Norris decided to pit, he suffered a four-second delay just as the virtual safety car was lifted.
Hinchcliffe commented that, despite Antonelli’s excellent performance, McLaren’s swift competition creates a sense of frustration for the young driver. “I don’t want to say that it’s better to be lucky than good, but sometimes it’s good to be both. He knows he’s a good driver, but he also got lucky,” Hinchcliffe noted on the F1 TV post-race show.
The journalist emphasizes that, as a driver, even in a victory, knowing there were faster competitors can leave a mark. “Even when you win, knowing someone was faster than you can give you a jab,” he concluded.
