The driver Kai Allen has etched his name in the history of the Supercars championship after winning his first race at the Ruapuna Park circuit, near Christchurch, New Zealand. This victory is part of a series of four races, resumed after the event affected by a cyclone that took place in Taupo.

Allen, just 20 years old, piloted his Ford Mustang from the Grove Racing team to a close victory of 0.742 seconds over the 2023 champion and championship leader, Brodie Kostecki, from Dick Johnson Racing. The key to Allen’s triumph was a strategic tire change, stopping in the pits five laps earlier than Kostecki and changing only two tires, while Kostecki changed four, thus gaining a five-second lead with 16 laps to go.

In the final laps, Kostecki attempted to overtake Allen, making contact with him with seven laps remaining, but the Grove Racing driver successfully fended off his attacks. This forced Kostecki to defend against the threat of a fast Ryan Wood, a driver from Walkinshaw TWG Racing, who ultimately finished in third place.

Allen, after his victory, stated he was “a bit speechless” and commented on the importance of his pit stop strategy. Ironically, Allen debuted as an endurance driver for DJR before being released in mid-2024, at which point Grove Racing did not hesitate to sign him.

Kostecki, for his part, revealed he struggled with his vehicle during the race, indicating he needed to improve in future events. Matt Payne, also from Grove Racing, achieved a commendable fourth position, while James Golding completed the top five with his Ford.

The day’s balance was not positive for the Triple Eight team, with Will Brown finishing in 17th place after an accident that caused him serious damage.

The competition will continue over the weekend with two more sprint-format races scheduled for Saturday.
