The Spanish rider Jorge Martín has suffered another physical setback during the weekend of the San Marino GP, which adds to the problems that have plagued him since his incorporation to Aprilia a year ago. On this occasion, he suffered a nerve compression in his right forearm, known to riders as arm pump.
The problem worsened during Sunday’s race, where Martín started strongly, leading for five laps before experiencing pain and loss of sensitivity in his arm, which made him drop to fifth place. For this Wednesday, the rider plans to undergo a medical review in Barcelona, where surgeons specializing in upper limbs will assess his injury and determine the necessary steps.
Afterward, Martín will travel to Spielberg to participate in this weekend’s Austrian GP. The decision on whether he will need surgery will be made after evaluating how his arm responds at the Red Bull Ring. The intervention for arm pump is relatively straightforward, and recovery is usually quick, which would mean he could return to a good level of form for the next GP of Japan on October 4.
However, as he himself commented, ‘going under the knife can always involve complications and must be evaluated carefully’, especially with the championship approaching its most decisive phase. Martín stated: ‘After Austria, we will evaluate how to address this physical issue and analyze the possible solutions.’
The rider acknowledged that the race in Misano did not go as he expected, although he took away positive aspects, such as the good pace he maintained at the beginning. ‘Now it’s time to focus on Austria, a circuit I like,’ he concluded.
Martín had occupied the championship’s top spot at the end of June in Assen, with 193 points, 40 more than Marc Márquez. In just four races, the Ducati rider has reduced this gap, and currently Márquez leads the standings with 274 points, tied with Martín but ahead on the number of victories.
