IndyCar has officially unveiled its new next-generation chassis, the IR-28, at an exclusive media event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This weekend, during two days of testing, the new vehicle will complete its first laps on the 2.439-mile track with 14 turns.
Drivers Alexander Rossi, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016 with Ed Carpenter Racing, and Alex Palou, current champion of the IndyCar Series with Chip Ganassi Racing, will be responsible for driving the new chassis during these initial tests.
The IR-28 represents a significant step in the evolution of the series as it replaces the long-standing DW12, which has dominated the competition since 2012 in various safety, aerodynamic, and engine configurations.
A Revolutionary Vision for Speed
Mark Sibla, senior vice president of competition and operations at IndyCar, explained the goals that have led to the design of the IR-28. Instead of modifying the current platform, IndyCar has collaborated with Dallara to create an entirely new vehicle.
“We saw that a new design could enhance performance capabilities and driver safety. This was a key decision,” Sibla commented.
One of the fundamental objectives of the project is to develop a car capable of exceeding performance standards and breaking track records, achieved thanks to a new 2.4-liter engine with more power and a weight reduction of approximately 45 kilograms.
‘Crawl, Walk, Run’ Development Strategy
Mike O’Gara, vice president of competition at Race Engineering, has been responsible for managing the testing schedule and implementation of the new vehicle. O’Gara, who joined the project shortly after it began, coordinates the development with IndyCar’s technical director, Nick Allen, and Dallara engineers.
The program utilizes a test car known as a ‘mule car’ with prototype components, focused on evaluating mechanical and aerodynamic features on different types of circuits.
After the initial tests, Dallara will begin large-scale production, intending for engine manufacturers to receive development cars by late 2026 or early 2027.
Aerodynamics and Improvements in Racing Conditions
One of the main goals of the IR-28 is to improve competitiveness on the track through better management of the turbulent air generated by the vehicle. O’Gara emphasized the importance of the new car making overtaking easier at all levels of the standings.
To achieve this, ‘flow conditioners’ have been added behind the front wheels. This aims to reduce the negative effect of turbulent air on following cars.
Safety, Ergonomics, and Driver Comfort
The IR-28 surpasses the safety standards established by the FIA, featuring a wide cockpit that allows better impact absorption and greater comfort for drivers of various sizes. Components such as pedals and steering wheels are adjustable to ensure optimized positioning for driver safety.
Moreover, the cockpit cooling system has been redesigned to improve efficiency, eliminating external elements that created drag. The integration of electronic controls on the steering wheel reduces the risk of hand injuries and expands the interior space.
Mechanical Grip, Future, and Cost Control
To improve mechanical grip, IndyCar has collaborated with Custom Access to develop a unique suspension system. This allows teams to have greater control over the vehicle’s driving characteristics.
Unlike previous chassis, all relevant components, such as the hybrid system, are integrated directly into the design from the outset, facilitating a more controlled and planned development by the teams.
In the future, IndyCar plans to maintain a shorter life cycle for the monocoque compared to the DW12, along with regular updates in design and aerodynamics to ensure the series continues to evolve.
