The IndyCar series has decided to modify its schedule for the 2027 season, confirming that it will not return to the Nashville Superspeedway and that there will be no repeat of the spectacular Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C.
This decision comes as the North American motorsport competition expands internationally, having reached an agreement to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Absence of Tennessee
Since 2024, IndyCar has competed at the 1.33-mile oval in Lebanon, Tennessee, as a temporary solution after needing a change due to the construction of the new NFL stadium for the Tennessee Titans. This change forced the reduction of space available for teams and fan activations. Now, it seems that there will be no IndyCar presence in the state for 2027.
D.C. will not have a repeat
Despite the massive success of the inaugural edition of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, which drew more than 215,000 spectators over a weekend, no new date is planned for 2027. This race, broadcast on FOX, achieved an average audience of 3.282 million people, making it the most-watched IndyCar race since the unification of open-wheel competitions in 2008.
New event in Spain
IndyCar, despite the loss of two of its own races, is focusing its efforts on internationalization. According to confirmations, an agreement has been established to hold a race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya starting in the summer of 2027. The competition is provisionally scheduled for July 18.
This new event will bring the leading North American open-wheel competition to the home country of the five-time series champion, Alex Palou. An official announcement is expected from the series officials, with the presence of Palou and IndyCar CEO Mark Miles this Friday, along with the release of the calendar for the second half of the 2027 season.
