Oscar Piastri maintained his top spot in FP2 in F1 Imola GP from McLaren teammate Lando Norris, as Pierre Gasly was third.
It was traffic mayhem to start FP2 in F1 Imola GP as Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was investigated for impeding Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso straight up. The Argentine was cleared but drivers continued to face traffic troubles for most part of the session on their fast lap.
It was McLaren 1-2 again as Oscar Piastri (1m15.293s) edged out Lando Norris by 0.025s margin, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly staking claim in third. Mercedes’ George Russell went early for his quick lap and was fourth still ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Visa Cash App RB’s Isack Hadjar was seventh. The Frenchman caused a late red flag after spinning off in the snake section. He touched the barrier but managed to move itself near the edge of the circuit to re-join. With cars going by, he had to find a gap and by the time he did, his rear tyres got beached.
He did well before that to finish ahead of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Williams pair of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz to round out the Top 10. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was only 11th after he complained about brakes again, with Leclerc joining the fray to complain about it.
Haas’ Oliver Bearman was 12th from Colapinto, as Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was 14th on the medium tyres. Visa Cash App RB’s Liam Lawson was 15th, finishing 0.962s behind Piastri – where the Top 15 were covered within a second of the pace-setter.
Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto was 16th from Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Haas’ Esteban Ocon, where the Italian made a mistake on his fast lap to find himself down the order in his home event.
UPDATE: The stewards cleared Bortoleto of overtaking Alonso under alleged yellow flag when Hadjar was beached in the gravel. The FIA couldn’t ascertain for certain that the marshal post and the light panel showed yellow when the Brazilian passed the Spaniard.
Bortoleto insisted that he passed him after seeing green flag and with no evidence otherwise, the stewards gave the driver the benefit of doubt and cleared him. Here: https://x.com/fiadocsbot/status/1923453406649233671
