Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton ended up quickest in third free practice session of F1 Hungarian GP in a dry session from Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
After rain spoiled the FP2 session in F1 Hungarian GP at Hungaroring, it was a crucial dry run in FP3 – although in much cooler conditions – but the session was shortened by 10 minutes after an oil spill at Turn 4 and 5 sequence from a Formula 2 race.
It was back and forth at the top as Mercedes’ Hamilton went quickest in the end with a 1m16.084s to set a new lap record after Red Bull’s Verstappen took set it initially with a 1m16.097s – the two were only 0.013s apart as Ferrari’s Vettel (1m16.166s) was third.
The German was close as well as he finished 0.083s behind Hamilton, with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas (1m16.355s) finishing fourth from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (1m16.392s) and Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly (1m16.684s) in the Top 6.
The best of the rest honours went to McLaren’s Lando Norris (1m16.774s), who was only 0.090s behind Gasly as Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen (1m17.216s) was eighth from the other McLaren of Carlos Sainz (1m17.217s) and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen (1m17.230s).
He had his teammate Romain Grosjean (1m17.293s) – in a different spec – just behind him in 11th with Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat (1m17.432s) slotting in 12th ahead of Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg (1m17.667s) and Racing Point’s Sergio Perez (1m17.670s).
It were then the second cars of three teams with Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi (1m17.929s) leading the way in 15th with Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo (1m17.962s) and Toro Rosso’s Alexander Albon (1m18.024s) behind.
Williams’ George Russell (1m18.072s) ended up ahead of Racing Point’s Lance Stroll (1m18.534s), who did not do more of the single lap runs, as Williams’ Robert Kubica (1m18.709s) rounded out the 20 drivers.
