Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US) has recently supported Porsche Motorsport’s request to quickly advance the establishment of regulations for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA for 2030. The company has highlighted the need for clear criteria to adequately plan its future participation in these competitions.
The new president of HRC US, Kelvin Fu, has confirmed that the company is paying attention to the discussions taking place between the FIA, the ACO, and IMSA. Although Honda has temporarily paused its program with Acura in IMSA for economic reasons related to improvements in LMDh vehicles, the company seeks to establish a clear future plan.
Fu, who recently took over from David Salters, explained that it is crucial to have a defined technical framework by the end of 2026 in order to assess the viability of future prototypes and justify the budgets related to the races. “It takes a year to clarify how the rules will be, as it is a long and complex process to design and adapt vehicles for competition,” he added.
The uncertainty about whether the new regulations will mean completely new designs or an evolution of the current LMDh and LMH models is one of the main challenges facing brands. Fu commented: “We are awaiting the specifications for structure, aerodynamics, and engines.”
Additionally, he highlighted that competitiveness, technological relevance, and alignment with each brand’s vehicle production strategies are fundamental to their decision to participate. He also emphasized the importance of the new regulations ensuring cost control and design freedom to maintain the brand’s visual identity.
Economic sustainability is a crucial aspect for manufacturers, as the new regulations foresee the prohibition of evolutionary improvements, thus guaranteeing a five-year competition period for each investment made.
