Lewis Hamilton has expressed his concern about the growing reliance of Formula 1 on complex software and energy management systems. The seven-time champion believes that drivers are unfairly penalized by complicated regulations instead of being rewarded for their speed.
In a recent interview on the StarTalk podcast during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton addressed the challenges posed by the current technical regulations of the competition. “It is very difficult for fans to completely understand, and also for us, because the ultimate goal behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car is to push it to the limit,” he commented.
The Ferrari driver explained that, currently, battery limitations lead to contradictory situations. “Every time we use power, we are charging the batteries, and when we are not using power, we are in a moment of cancellation,” Hamilton said. This dynamic can affect drivers’ lap times when they try to take more risks and approach corners at greater speed.
Hamilton pointed out that the loss of power this year, due to the removal of the MGU-H, has created confusion and frustration among the drivers. “Yesterday, I was losing three tenths just because the software wasn’t working correctly. I found out when I spoke with my engineers,” he added.
After nine races of the 2026 season, Hamilton sits in third place in the drivers’ championship, behind leader Kimi Antonelli and his Mercedes teammate, George Russell.
