The motor racing community has four nominations for 2020 Laureus Awards with Lewis Hamilton, Marc Marquez, Sophia Floersch and Mercedes all in the list.
Unlike 2019, when there were only two nominations from the motor racing community with Hamilton and Mercedes, the 2020 Laureus Awards has them included again along with two more names added to the list, that of Marquez and Floersch.
Both Hamilton and Marquez have been nominated under the ‘Sportman Of The Year’ category, which makes it two from the same community in the list. The former won his sixth F1 title, while the latter took his sixth MotoGP crown in 2019.
They both are clubbed against Rafael Nadal (Tennis), Lionel Messi (Football), Tiger Woods (Golf) and Eliud Kipchoge (Athletics). At the same time, German F1 outfit Mercedes is nominated under the ‘World Team Of The Year’ category.
It is its sixth nomination as they are up against Liverpool FC (Football), South Africa Rugby Union (Rugby), Spain Men’s Basketball Team (Basketball), Toronto Raptors (Basketball) and United States’ Women’s Football Team (Football).
Among the racing teams to have won in the past, Renault took it in 2006 with Brawn GP in 2010 and Mercedes in 2018. And for the individuals, Michael Schumacher won in his category in 2002 and 2004, while Sebastian Vettel took it in 2014.
In the final nomination, F3 racer Floersch has made it to the ‘World Comeback Of The Year’ category after the German’s return to formula racing in the 2019 Formula Regional European Championship with Dutch team, Van Amersfoort Racing.
Floersch had a massive crash in the 2019 Macau GP, where he injured herself and was hospitalised for months in the winter. She eventually made it back to racing and also returned to compete in 2020 Macau GP with HWA Racelab.
Aside the fixed nominations, Laureus is also looking at ‘Sporting Moment’, where they will have selected 20 moments between 2000-2020. There will be three rounds to determine one winner, where Mick Schumacher driving Michael’s Ferrari has made it into Round 1.
