Ferrari continued to be on top in second practice session in F1 German GP with Charles Leclerc ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.
Like the FP1 session at Hockenheim in F1 German GP, the FP2 session saw a red flag period as well after a heavy shunt for Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly in the final corner when his rear snapped on him as the left side of his car brushed the tyre barrier.
He finished only 15th from his earlier time of 1m15.089s as Leclerc kept Ferrari on top for the second successive session after his 1m13.449s time with Vettel (1m13.573s) in second from the two Mercedes drivers Hamilton (1m13.595s) and Valtteri Bottas (1m14.111s).
The other Red Bull of Max Verstappen (1m14.133s) slotted in fifth ahead of Haas’ Romain Grosjean (1m14.179s), who was the best of the rest from Racing Point’s Lance Stroll (1m14.268s) with Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen (1m14.458s) slotting in eighth.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg was ninth but the German continued to have set-up issues, wherein he stalled at the pit exit and had to be pushed back into his garage. Unknowingly, McLaren’s Lando Norris was stuck behind him as well and had to be pushed back.
The Top 10 was rounded by Racing Point’s Sergio Perez (1m14.518s) with McLaren’s Carlos Sainz (1m14.662s) only 11th from Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat (1m14.800s). The former had a brake pedal failure late in the session with few seconds to go.
Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo (1m15.010s) slotted in 13th with Toro Rosso’s Alexander Albon (1m15.062s) 14th from the aforementioned Gasly as Norris (1m15.247s) was only 16th with Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi (1m15.406s) was 17th.
The other Haas of Kevin Magnussen (1m15.470s) was only 18th from the two Williams as George Russell (1m16.900s) was back in front of Robert Kubica (1m16.980s) – with the upgrades seemingly working considering their lap times closer to the leaders.
