The Formula 1 driver George Russell has shared that he still has emotional wounds from his debut with Mercedes during the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. On that occasion, Russell had to substitute for Lewis Hamilton, who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Russell, who at the time was part of the Williams team, received the call-up at the beginning of the week and, the next day, he was already testing the car. Unfortunately, he couldn’t adjust properly to his seat, as he was noticeably taller than the team’s usual drivers.
The Brit explained that he had to wear smaller shoes, making it difficult to adapt to the vehicle. ‘The situation was not ideal, but I did everything possible to make it work and faced it as a challenge for me,’ Russell recalled. In his debut, he managed to qualify second, just 0.026 seconds off pole, and led the race in the early moments.
Despite his good start, a mistake in the pit stops compromised his chances of victory, with an incorrect tire change that forced him to return to the garage. In the final stretch, Russell suffered a puncture that cut short his opportunity to win. ‘After what I showed in that race, I was convinced that I had sealed my future with the team, but it was hard to lose it all,’ the driver commented.
If his career had ended that day, Russell believes the consequences would have scarred him for life. This intense experience has left a deep mark on his professional journey, which motivates him even more to pursue success in his current role with Mercedes.
