The first event of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in Barcelona has been a true whirlwind of emotions for the Genesis team, which began with high expectations but ended with a frustrating outcome. Daniel Juncadella, the local driver, did not hide his disappointment after a mistake that took the #19 GMR-001 car from the first position to the last, finishing the race in 11th place.

Juncadella made a spectacular start from third place, overtaking Toyota and his teammate Andre Lotterer as he reached the first turn. However, with the track conditions still wet after the rain, he lost control in turn 5 and dropped to 16th place.

Despite the adversities, two safety car interventions allowed Juncadella to recover positions, managing to place himself in the top ten during the race’s opening. However, as the track dried, the team could not maintain the necessary pace to compete for points, finishing a lap behind the winner, the Toyota TR010 Hybrid driven by Sebastien Buemi.

After the race, Juncadella admitted his mistake: ‘I messed up. I’m sorry for the team. It was a tough race with some setbacks, but we keep moving forward. It was frustrating. I had a good start, but I misjudged the grip and the braking point, going from first to last, which was very annoying.’

Saturday’s event had been promising for Genesis, with Mathys Jaubert achieving the first pole in its history. However, the race was a true challenge with a series of incidents that left both team vehicles out of the points battle. Lotterer, who fell from first to third place on the first lap, was also affected by a technical issue.

Justin Taylor, chief engineer of Genesis, acknowledged that the Barcelona event was a learning experience for the team. He commented that, despite the initial expectations, the performance during the race was not up to par: ‘It has been a formative day for everyone; it’s part of the learning process of a new entrant in the championship.’

With the next event in Monza on the horizon, Juncadella hopes that the team can overcome these obstacles and return better prepared.
