Pierre Gasly says it was not that Alpine had a bad season, but others had a better one as he was a bit disappointed from results point of view.

It was a mixed bag for Alpine’s Gasly in his first season with the F1 team. He came with larger expectation, but it didn’t end go as per that. He admits that the ambitions they had weren’t matched and it was disappointing from result point of view.

But he doesn’t regards it as a bad result, he reckons others did better just. “I’ll say there have been some positives, obvious one is the Top 3 finishes in Spa and Zandvoort, but on the flip side there were way more challenges than we expected and haven’t been able to match the ambitions and targets we set ourselves at the start of the year,” said Gasly.

“Its been a challenging year, been disappointing on the result point of view but I’ll not say we had a bad season, I’ll just say others had a better season and did a better job than we did. That’s the way I look at it. I think objectively we finished the year strongly than the start and I have seen a lot of positive evolution, progress, improvements made over the year and it does give me good hopes for the coming season,” summed up Gasly.

Elaborating more, on the onset, Gasly thought Alpine will be in and around the Top 3 but with McLaren and Aston Martin overpowering them, they were left behind then. They could show their performance at certain times, but it was not consistent enough.

“I think from performance point of view, we just haven’t been able to have the car to allow us to fight for the results that we were expecting to be more consistently close to the Top 5 and challenge this Top 3,” said Gasly.

“We thought it would be Top 3 at the start but it turned out to be Top 4 with Aston and McLaren made a very significant improvement at some point of the year, so we have just unfortunately be slightly at the back of it. In couple of occasions, very specific to track, we have been able to show our noses but not enough to be in any sort of battle at any point.”
